“Kristian Nergaard is Norway’s greatest winner in sailing”
According to sport historian Tom A Shanke at norwegian newspaper “kyllingsposten”, no other norwegian sailor has won more World and European Championship medals.
Kyllingposter writes (translated to english):
Kristian Nergaard wins World Championship gold in 2012 and silver in 2013 Scandinavian Gold Cup
Sailing is one of the many sports that do not get special attention in the media. Then it is good that the editor has studied the norwegian sport elite achievements for the last 150 years in the “Norwegian Sports Lexicon”. In the chapter on sailing in Volume 3, I realize that Kristian Nergaard, with crew Trond Solli-Saether and Johan Barne (Sweden) won World Championship gold in the 5.5 meter class last fall. It was Nergaards medal #19 in a World or European Championship, thus equaling board sailor Jorunn Horgen 19 medals. Nergaard and crew have just come back from World Championships 2013 in Curaco in the Caribbean. A “black flag start” in the penultimate race made Nergaard failed to defend the 2012 Gold a had to settle for silver, narrowly beaten by German Marcus Wieser. It was a great World Championships for Norway as Petter Fjeld with the crew Thomas Borgen and Christen Horn Johannessen (younger brother of Olympic sailor Herman) won the bronze.
Nergaard on top with 20 World Cup / European Championship medals
With the recent World Championship silver, Kristian Nergaard (born 18.03.1962) climbed to the top of the most successful Norwegian sailors in World and European Championships. Nergaard has 17 World Championship medals (7-9-1), three European Championship medals (1-1-1) and total 8-10-2 = 20 medals. Also worth mentioning that Kristian’s father Kalle Nergaard (1927-2005) in his time was one of our best sailors and won two World Championship gold medals, two World Championship silver, 1 bronze and 1 European Championship silver. And once you’re at the family may I mention that Kristian’s younger brother Peder was crew aboard Herman Horn Johannessen Melges 24 boat, which won the European Championship silver in 1999. Thus the family Nergaard won 27 medals in World or European Championships. No. 2 on the list is the individual Jorunn Horgen with 10 World Championship medals (6-3-1), 9 European Championship medals (4-3-2) and total 10-6-3 = 19 medals. No. 3 on the list is Olympic sailor Herman Horn Johannessen (a participant in four Olympics and bronze in 2000) with OL (0-0-1), Worlds (2-3-0), Europeans (2-4-3) and total 4-7-4 = 15 medals.
